Don and Gloria have lived in the Georgetown area their entire lives, having first met in Grade 5 and later marrying in 1968. Their connection to the community, and to the hospital that serves it, spans generations.
They recall a time when local healthcare looked very different. In their youth, they witnessed their parents and neighbours travel to Guelph for emergency care, as Georgetown Hospital had not yet been built. That early experience shaped their understanding of what it means for a community to have accessible, quality care close to home.
Following successful careers, Don and Gloria entered an active retirement, one that includes gardening, travel, tennis, cycling, and hiking. Community service has remained a constant throughout their lives: 25 years of volunteering with the Bruce Trail, a decade contributing to the Meals on Wheels program, and, in recent years, continued volunteer work with the Georgetown Bread Basket food bank.
Throughout their lives, they consider themselves fortunate to have enjoyed good health. As members of a large extended family, however, they have long recognized how essential it is to have reliable, high-quality care available locally.
That understanding became deeply personal in 2024, when Don was admitted to Georgetown Hospital as a patient for the first time. The exceptional care he received left a lasting impression and reinforced their commitment to the hospital’s future.
They shared, “We realize how important health is and we want to do what we can to ensure the local hospital is there for everyone, whenever it is needed, now and in the future.”
In keeping with this commitment, Don and Gloria have chosen to include a gift to Georgetown Hospital in their wills, helping to ensure that the standard of care they have come to value will be available to future generations.
